Redesigning a clinical signal workflow for everyday use

I worked on an offline cardiovascular desktop app used across the full study flow: finding a patient, setting up the study, recording signals and reviewing calculated parameters. The main challenge was making a very technical product easier to follow while keeping the controls specialists actually use.

The old workflow made every task feel equally complex

The previous application put configuration, signal tools and calculated data in front of the user at the same time. I reorganized the experience around the order clinicians actually work in, then gave each stage enough space to do its job.

Legacy VascuLab study editor
Before Study setup combined patient measurements, configuration, probes and report controls in one dense editor.
Redesigned VascuLab new study page
After General information, patient data and probes are separated into readable groups with one clear action to continue.
01Preserve depth

The specialist controls still had to stay available. I focused on when and where they appear instead of removing them.

02Reduce navigation cost

Patient context, previous studies and recording states needed a much clearer connection.

03Protect attention

During recording and analysis, the graphs deserve most of the screen. Navigation and controls can stay quieter.

Design principle

Show complexity when it becomes useful

I kept specialist tools close to the task that needs them: setup controls before recording, capture controls during the study, and detailed processing tools in analysis.

I made the patient record the starting point for the study

The database is where the workflow begins. Clinicians can find a patient, check previous studies, move or copy records when needed, and start a new study from the same context.

VascuLab local patient database
Database Search, status, study count and bulk actions stay visible without turning the table into a control panel.
VascuLab database search results
Find Search narrows the database without taking the user into a separate screen.
VascuLab patient page and study timeline
Patient context Measurements, timeline and previous studies stay together before another study begins.

Study setup needed more room than a modal could give it

Study setup carries a lot of information: analysis type, lead placement, distances, patient measurements and probes. Moving it into a proper page made those relationships easier to scan and edit before recording starts.

Legacy study configuration modal
Before Long analysis lists and probe configuration competed inside a compact modal.
Redesigned study configuration page
After The setup has room for readable labels, grouped patient data and an editable probe table.

Probe setup combines technical settings with a body reference

Placement and signal settings belong to the same decision. I kept them together so the clinician can see the body reference while choosing the lead scheme, duration and signal type.

Add probe modal with body placement diagram
Add probe Placement, lead scheme, duration and signal type are configured together.

Recording is mostly about watching the signal

I gave synchronized channels most of the canvas. The overview at the top shows progress, the phase bar makes the protocol easy to follow, and the small control rail stays within reach without taking over the screen.

Legacy VascuLab recording workspace
Before Dense toolbars, menus and multiple panels competed with the recording itself.

03ResolveCompletion offers a clear path to save, analyze or retake.
Recording completed state
Completion The next decision appears at the moment recording finishes.
Retake study confirmation
Retake A destructive restart explicitly explains that the current recording will be deleted.

I kept the analysis canvas stable while the tools change around it

The recording stays visible while the right side changes with the task. Clinicians can check parameters, switch signal views, measure the graph or adjust calculations without jumping between separate windows.

Legacy VascuLab analysis screen
Before Analysis mixed graphs, markers, tables, tabs and toolbar actions with little visual prioritization.
Redesigned VascuLab processing workspace
After The recording stays anchored while the processing panel carries the current analytical task.

One workspace, several analytical modes

Calculated parameter table
Parameters Values, units, norm ranges and descriptions can be shown together.
Calculation settings and selected range
Calculations Full-record or selected-range calculations and normalization options stay contextual.
Signal channel visibility controls
Channels Relevant raw, derivative and supporting signals can be toggled without leaving the graph.
Graph ruler and measurement tooltip
Measurement The ruler adds precise coordinates directly on the graph instead of separating measurement from inspection.

A few actions needed stronger guardrails

Retaking a study can delete a recording, and saving too early can leave the analysis incomplete. I added direct confirmations at those points, with the consequence and next action written out clearly.

Save analysis confirmation
Before save Users can review processing parameters before committing the analysis.
Assign analysis to patient warning
Incomplete context An unassigned analysis cannot silently save without the required patient information.

The result is a workflow that feels like one product

The biggest change is structural. Patient management, setup, recording and analysis now follow the same interaction language, and advanced controls stay available where specialists expect them.

Product contribution

A clearer path through a very technical workflow

The interface gives the signal more space and makes the next step easier to understand, while the detailed tools are still there when needed.

WorkflowPatient → study → recording → analysis reads as one connected sequence.
FocusGraphs and clinical data receive the majority of the working canvas.
ControlAdvanced tools remain available through contextual panels and controls.
SafetyDestructive and incomplete states communicate consequences before action.
